week 1 done

HELLOOOO i am DONE with week 1!!!

seriously, it went by so fast... probably because i spend a majority of my day at school and then i come home and eat dinner and rest a little and then-- .... it's time to sleep already.
my sleeping schedule is from 10/10:30pm to 6:30am errday now. i feel like i'm missing out on life, but it's ok i guess. i'm so thankful to God for this opportunity and so far, i'm loving it (which is... weird.)

so i don't remember if i've mentioned this before, but i have 2 exams every friday for the next 7 weeks -- 1 lecture exam and 1 lab practical. today was my first day of exams.

if you don't know what a lab practical is...

let me explain to you what it's like:
1. you go into this huge AC-blasted room with rows and rows of human cadavers zipped up halfway.

2. each body has 2 numbers, one on each side. you each choose a number and stand there (one person at each station) with a clipboard and a sheet of paper that has a double column of lines numbering to 50. test starts, and you start with that number, having only 1 minute at each station.

3. each station can either have a string attached to a certain muscle or nerve on the human cadaver, or it could have a bone with colored tape on a certain part of it. the task is either to label the taped part on the bone (or the bone in general), name the muscle/nerve that the string is attached to, or identify the insertion (where the muscle ends), action (what action the muscle does), or nerve that innervates that muscle. sometimes it's not straightforward. the question is asked in a very tertiary way.

4. you write the answer on the blank next to the number of the station, and when the bell rings, you move onto the next station.

5. there are rest stations placed between random numbered stations, at which you have a minute to rest.

--> so here is a summary of my first exam experience:

1. i walked into the building at 7:45am, only to be greeted by my TA andy, who made our group care packages in light of our first exams. how. freaking. awesome. is. that.

[TAs waiting for their students to arrive]

note: we have about 120 students (physical and occupational therapy students) in our anatomy class. for lab, we have to group up into 4's or 5's and choose a TA (a 2nd year PT/OT student) to work with for the week.  there are about 20-something TA's. each TA made his/her group a care package.

2. the anatomy class was split into 2 groups: one group took the lab practical first, and the other written. and then we switched after 2 hours. both times, the professor prayed for us before handing us our exams.

3. when walking into the lab, we were greeted by the stomping&clapping beat of the "we will rock you" song from the TAs, who were lined against the sides of the room. (some were placed at rest stations.)

4. at the first rest station i got to, i noticed that the stool where i was to sit was super close to this random TA's stool. i awkwardly sat at the edge of mine, and the TA leaned in and whispered in my ear, "do you want a massage?" i was shocked and creeped out, and kindly declined the offer. but then i realized when i was offered a massage again by my TA at my next rest station, that the 1st TA wasn't trying to be creepy. i felt bad. and then accepted every offer after that.

5. took my written exam after in the lecture room and came out in 25 minutes. went to costco with friends and ate all the samples as a way of celebrating the end of week 1 (and saving money).

man, this week felt like finals week and it was only week 1. the grade cut-offs for this class is kinda high (ex. 89-91 = B+) and the material is only going to get tougher from here. i hope through God's strength that i could study even harder than i did this week and be able to end my first class of grad school ever with an A
(even though grades don't really matter at this point...)!

results already out:
*lecture exam: A-
*lab exam: A

thank. you. Lord.
